The bitter cold made it difficult for firefighters to put out a fire that destroyed a Commack restaurant Friday.
Firefighters were called to Il Giardino Restaurant on Jericho Turnpike around 3:30 a.m. Fire officials say the flames were hard to battle due to the freezing temperatures. They say some fire hydrants were difficult to open due to the cold.
According to officials, the fire began in the basement of the building. They say as a result, the first floor of the restaurant collapsed. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze.Hours later, firefighters were still battling hot spots. The building has been condemned and was bulldozed. However, Il Giardino owner Jack Romano says he would like to eventually reopen the restaurant.
The Suffolk County Arson Squad and the Huntington Town fire marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
