(10/19/06) COMMACK - Residents in a Commack neighborhood were panicked Thursday when police shut down streets for hours while responding to an unusual situation.
Authorities say shortly before 11 a.m. a man threatened his own mother with a knife. Police locked down local schools and closed off streets near 36 Florida Avenue for more than three hours as K-9 units and SWAT teams moved to the scene. Police say they were unsure if the suspect had remained in his home, so they told all neighbors to either stay in their houses or to stay away if already out.
Police arrested the man in an empty house down the block. Although the man was unarmed at the time of his arrest, investigators say they found a sword and gun back in his home.
