The Coast Guard has called off its search for a missing 19-year-old boater near Whitewood Point in Lloyd Harbor.
Police say the 19-year-old man was working on a sailboat Monday when he fell overboard into the water off Centre Island at around 11:30 p.m. He was working on a sailboat with an 18-year-old friend when he went overboard.
News 12 was told that the 18-year-old called another person to the scene on a different boat to help search. They then called 911.
According to police, the 19-year-old man was wearing a blue button-down shirt and khakis at the time of the incident.
Nassau County police say its boats could be back on the water on Wednesday.
As boating season gets underway, first responders say the most important thing to remember when heading out on the water is your life jacket and that you wear it. "Have your personal floatation devices on. 86% of people who drown, according to the Coast Guard, drown because they don't have their floatation device on," says Chief Don Spada, of the Halesite Fire Department. The circumstances of what led the man to fall overboard or whether or not he was wearing a life jacket is not yet clear.
