Two bodies have been recovered after a small plane carrying four people crashed off the coast of the South Fork on Saturday, according to the Coast Guard.
The FAA says the plane went down shortly before 3 p.m. The plane went down about a mile and a half off the coast of Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett.
The Coast Guard and other agencies are involved in an active search and rescue operation to locate the other two occupants of the downed aircraft.
Officials say the first body was recovered from the Piper PA-31 Navajo aircraft by East Hampton lifeguards.
Authorities have not confirmed the identities of the plane's occupants.
“We are stricken by this loss,” Coast Guard Capt. Kevin B. Reed, commander Sector Long Island Sound, said in a statement. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones of the two recovered individuals.”
The cause of the plane crash remains unclear. But initial reports show that it went down in rough weather.
“At that time there were actually some pretty large thunderstorms passing through the South Shore,” says News 12 Meteorologist Pat Cavlin. Radar from that time indicated lightning and heavy downpours in the area.
The NTSB will investigate the crash.
It marks the second small plane crash on Long Island this week. A small plane crash in Melville on Wednesday killed a Pennsylvania stunt pilot.
