A clerical error resulted in the overtaxing of more than 100 Head of the Harbor homeowners.
One-hundred-seventeen homes in Head of the Harbor, which is a part of the Town of Smithtown and Three Village School District, were overtaxed. One resident double checked the numbers on his tax bill and uncovered the error.
Smithtown Town Assessor Greg Hild said the homeowners were overcharged a big chunk of change. "We estimate that it's approximately $1,000 a house," Hild said. "Now, some houses will be less, some will be more."
Exact refund amounts should be known next week and adjustments could be made by May 31, town and school district officials said. The county executive and Legislature also have to approve the refunds.
