Residents in Islip Terrace are attempting to clean up the aftermath from a tornado that touched down and wreaked havoc in their neighborhood.
The tornado hit around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday on Nassau Street with winds of up to 110 miles per hour. The National Weather Service classified it as an EF-1 tornado.
It left streets filled with downed trees and fallen power lines, roofs damaged and residents terrified. Patio furniture and a backyard shed were also blown away from the force of the tornado.
Residents say they were expecting to get help from the town to clean up the mess, but have been told it is their responsibility. They say the town told them it is only responsible to help clean up trees that are in the streets and 10 feet from the curb.
Some residents say despite the damage, they were lucky no one got hurt.
