The East Meadow School District ignored a state ruling Tuesday that would allow a deaf teen to bring his service dog to school. The New York State Division of Human Rights ruled Monday that Clarke High School must allow John Cave to bring the dog, Simba, to school with him. The 15-year-old has been banned from bringing the dog with him since last year. The district maintains they have accommodated Cave in many ways and that the dog is disruptive and poses a health risk to other students and faculty. School officials say they plan on appealing the ruling and refused to allow Cave in with the dog.
Cave and his family members call the school?s action ?disgusting and discriminatory.? Cave?s attorney, Paul Margiotta, says he will bring an action in state court to force them to allow the dog into school. To watch an interview with Cave and his family, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select iO Extra.
