Riverdale residents say they’ve spent years voicing concerns about the conditions of West 254th Street, between Riverdale Avenue and the Metro-North station, including the tight, two-way traffic and no sidewalks in certain spots.

“I think it’s fairly urgent,” said Doron Fagelson, of Riverdale. “I think it should’ve really been addressed a long time ago.”

“This has been going on for a long time, so I don’t really know when they’re going to fix it,” said Brendan Dunnion, of Riverdale.

The city’s Department of Design and Construction [DDC] recently updated its improvement proposal for the area, which includes new water and sewer lines, sidewalks on both sides of the street, and widening them for ADA compliance.

People told News 12 that, right now, the area is dangerous for homeowners, students attending the nearby Jewish academy, and those accessing the train station.

“I have to zigzag [across the street],” said Rosie Cong, a Metro-North commuter. “I walk a little bit over here, then I [cross and] walk on that side. So, it does seem tricky.”

“With the cars parked on the side, sometimes it makes it hard to pass by,” said Kecia Ramsey, a Metro-North bus driver. “[It is] dark out here. You see how dark it is. These roads are horrible out here.”

Fagelson said some temporary improvements have been made since he moved in nine years ago, like the large boulders serving as a barrier between pedestrians and traffic.

“It’s not perfect, but I'm definitely happier now than before [the temporary improvements],” Fagelson said.

The DDC, as well as members of the local Community Board 8, were unavailable for interviews on Monday.

If the plan is approved, construction is set to begin in the early winter of 2027.
