City officials announced Friday a proposal to ban the reading and sending of text messages while driving.Councilman David Werpin hopes that the new bill will make city roads safer by preventing thousands of car accidents.Violators of the proposed law would be penalized $100 for the first offense and $250 for any subsequent offenses.According to a 2007 AAA and Seventeen Magazine survey, 46 percent of teenagers admitted to texting while driving.?I am really happy they are introducing it because teens don?t know what they can and can?t do with their cell phone,? says one supporter. While the City Council is considering the proposal, the state Legislature is working on a similar ban.
