A supervisor who delayed a visit to a New Cassel mother's home before she allegedly killed her kids over the weekend was suspended Tuesday.
Leatrice Brewer, 27, pleaded not guilty to first- and second-degree murder charges Tuesday. Brewer allegedly drowned her three small children and then jumped out of her second-floor apartment window. She was admitted to Nassau University Medical Center after the jump and was arraigned there while handcuffed to her hospital bed.
Associated Press reporter Frank Eltman, the one reporter allowed at the arraignment, described Brewer as distraught.
A Child Protective Services supervisor may have dropped the ball regarding Brewer?s case, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi said in a news conference Tuesday.
"There were 14 cases that were required to have an initial visit. Of those 14, contact was made in 11 cases," Suozzi said. "In three cases, no contact was made. Two of those three were to be visited again Saturday. This case was not assigned to be visited again until Sunday."
Suozzi said the supervisor who assigned a caseworker to visit the home again Sunday, rather than Saturday, is suspended without pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
Brewer is being held without bail and is due back in court Thursday.
