One day after Hazmat crews responded to a noxious smell at Westhampton Beach Learning Center, the Suffolk County Department of Health believes it knows the odor's cause.
Health officials say a diaper used by a disabled student might have come in contact with cleaning fluid, causing a chemical reaction.
While nobody was hospitalized, Dr. Julie Lutz of Eastern Suffolk BOCES says there were "about six staff members who were initially complaining of a variety of symptoms, respiratory symptoms."
School officials say students were checked medically before being sent home. None of them needed to be decontaminated. The school remained closed Friday.
