(09/05/07) GREENLAWN ? Charges were upgraded Tuesday night against the distracted driver accused of fatally hitting a woman in Greenlawn.
Police said after further investigation, 48-year-old Bradley Dorman was charged with driving while impaired by drugs and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Authorities said Dorman admitted during questioning to drug use on the night in question. "I took three OxyContin pills and my head felt foggy...I knew I shouldn't be driving," police reported Dorman as saying.
According to police, Dorman got distracted while driving Monday night due to a spilled cup of coffee on his lap. He then drove his vehicle on a curb, hit a mailbox and then fatally struck 84-year-old Kate Porto, police said.
Dorman was initially issued a ticket for failing to exercise due care while operating a vehicle. However, investigators said they later returned to the scene and found pills and a marijuana pipe on the curb. According to police, lab results linked those items to Dorman.
"I wish I could do it all over," Dorman said. "I have total remorse for them. I wish I could bring their mother back."
