North Fork residents say they feel a sense of relief after the driver of a limousine involved in a crash that killed four women in Cutchogue was charged Wednesday with criminally negligent homicide.
The crash occurred when driver Carlos Pino was trying to make a U-turn at the intersection of Depot Lane and County Road 48 last summer.
Pino, of Bethpage, has been charged with four counts of criminally negligent homicide, as well as four charges of assault in the third degree. He pleaded not guilty to the 13-count indictment on Wednesday.
Susan Tyler lives just down the road from where the fatal accident took place. She and other neighbors like Beth Shipman say that in the spring and summer months, limousine drivers consistently make U-turns at the intersection, putting the lives of their passengers and other drivers at risk in the process.
"It takes a limousine at least a three-point turn to make that turn, sometimes a five-point turn," says Shipman.
A traffic light at the intersection used to feature just a yellow caution light, but officials upgraded the signal in October to a fully functional four-way stop.
It does not feature a left turning arrow. Without that, both Shipman and Tyler fear that a similar tragedy could happen.
