Family and friends of Lt. Michael Murphy, a fallen Navy Seal killed in Afghanistan, attended a ceremony in his honor Saturday.
The ceremony was organized by the North Patchogue-Medford Youth Athletic Club and held on the baseball field in Patchogue where Murphy played as a little boy. During the ceremony, the club unveiled a black granite memorial etching of the lieutenant as an 11-year-old baseball player and as a 29-year-old soldier. The story of his final actions as a soldier are also etched in the center of the granite.
Murphy was killed in 2005 trying to save fellow soldiers in Afghanistan. The Navy Seal is the recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. His family calls the ceremony bittersweet.
?It's very wonderful and overwhelming to find that everyone's been paying their respects and coming up with all these tributes for my brother,? said John Murphy.
The field has been renamed Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Field.
