Centereach first graders are doing their part to help Ukraine.
The students are running a coin collection, which has become a schoolwide initiative leading to hundreds of dollars raised.
The class at Our Savior New American School started the coin collection and their teachers said they expected to collect a "few" dollars.
Their little collection turned into a school-wide collection, and students started to empty out their piggy banks and donate their funds. Other students donated their snack money.
Within a week, the donation grew from 2 cents to $1,166 and is growing.
A teacher who is of Ukrainian descent offered to match the total funds collected!
The funds will be presented to a representative of Our Savior Lutheran Church, of which OSNAS is a ministry of. The funds will be combined with a collection taken at the church and be distributed to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead, Samaritan's Purse, and Orphan's Promise.
