A Center Moriches man was in court Friday to face charges stemming from a 2014 incident involving Suffolk police and his neighbors.
As News 12 has reported, Thomas DeMint, 20, used his cellphone to record an encounter between 7th Precinct officers and his neighbors - two brothers and their mother.
The video appears to show the mother slammed roughly to the ground by an officer as her sons struggle nearby.
DeMint says he was walking away afterward and was tackled from behind and arrested. He was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.
"It was our hope the matter would be dismissed today based on conversations with the District Attorney's Office," said attorney Peter Citrin. "I have no idea why it's taken so long. All he did was videotape the occurrence. That's it."
DeMint says at this point, he's just hoping the charges will be dismissed.
"It hasn't really bothered me," says DeMint. "I kind of get harassed by the police. I've been pulled over numerous times since the incident happened."
DeMint is due back in court on Nov. 20.
A spokesperson for the Suffolk Police Department says Internal Affairs is investigating DeMint's harassment complaint.
DeMint's attorney says if the charges are dropped, they will be filing a false arrest lawsuit.
