A high-speed police chase ended in tragedy Thursday after a car slammed into a Farmingdale house, killing a man.
Police say the victim, 59-year-old William Calhoun, was watching television in his house on Route 109 near Vernon Street. According to police, officers in North Amityville approached 28-year-old Richard Mair, of Mastic, in his car because they suspected a drug deal was taking place. They say Mair then took off. Witnesses watched the car speed by with police in pursuit before his Pontiac sedan crashed. They say the entire car was lodged inside the house, and only the taillights were visible from the outside.
Meanwhile, Mair was brought to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. Police have not said with what Mair will be charged, but did indicate he was under the influence.
