Canine Companions celebrated National Service Dog Month in Medford on Tuesday.
The organization works to provide service to adults, children and veterans with disabilities.
This month, Canine Companions is working to educate Long Islanders on how service dogs help their partners live with greater independence.
"Our service dogs are trained to perform tasks for people to help with daily living activities," says Debra Dougherty, Canine Companions northeast region executive director. "Many things that we may do and not think about that the dogs will be able to help a person we service do those tasks."
Canine Companions is the nation's first and largest service dog organization.
