Candidates for Islip supervisor did some last-minute stumping Sunday and reaffirmed why they feel they're the right person for the job.
Supervisor Phil Nolan (D-Islip) took over the post last year in a special election when Peter McGowan resigned over misuse of campaign funds. In that time, Nolan claims he's cut waste and restored accountability.
"We did away with a practice called confidential pay, which is essentially secret pay raises for Town Hall insiders," Nolan said. "It's a practice that wasted a million dollars in the last decade."
If Nolan wins, he would become the first Democrat in 40 years to be elected to the post full-time.
Republican opponent Clara Datre, of Hauppauge, pointed to Nolan's effort to install Global Positioning Systems in town vehicles as wasteful.
"What he's not telling people is that the GPS system that's put into the cars cost the town of Islip approximately $12,000 a month, and when you do that times 12, you get $144,000 just for the GPS," Datre countered.
She's telling voters she's not a career politician and that she stands for change.
News 12 Long Island will have results of the race when polls close Tuesday.
