The American Cancer Society on Wednesday advised women who are at high risk of breast cancer to undergo annual MRI screenings.
ACS said an MRI screening could spot cancers a mammogram might miss.
"Mammogram is still the test everyone needs to start with, but in certain selective cases, particularly women who are at high risk and have dense breast tissue, MRI may offer a new early-detection technique," said Dr. Abraham Port of Complete Women's Imaging in Oceanside. ACS said more than 1 million high-risk women should get an MRI every year. Women who have close relatives with breast cancer fall into that category.
Insurance coverage, however, could be an issue, said Geri Barish, a breast cancer survivor and activist with Hewlett House.
"Most insurance companies do cover it," Barish said. "But like anything else, there are those that don't."
