A donation jar that was collecting money to help people with cancer was stolen from a Mastic car wash.
Arlene Leibert, a survivor of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, was left with one lung and one kidney. Despite her physical obstacles, she still manages to devote much of her free time to raise funds for a cure for cancer.
Liebert places donation boxes in businesses in her community of Mastic. In June, a donation box that was placed at the Stadium Car Wash was stolen from the counter.
Leibert calls the crime a "blessing in disguise" because now the owner of the car wash has offered to hold a special fundraising event. For every car that comes through the car wash, the owner will be making a donation.
"Every dollar counts," Leibert said. "It could be that dollar that finds a cure and that's exciting."
Police are still looking for the thief and just released a video of the crime.
Officials are asking with anyone with information to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
