Motorists along Route 25 in Calverton were met with a political message during their commutes Monday just before the presidential debate at Hofstra University.
A variable message road sign posted by the state Department of Transportation was hacked to say, "Vote Trump," officials say.
The DOT told News 12 Long Island that the situation was corrected on Monday. However, News 12 reporter Drew Scott was able to approach a road sign Wednesday afternoon and gain access to its control box.
Inside the box were instructions on how to enter a password.
Some drivers told News 12 that they found humor in the hack.
"It must have been the Russians who changed the sign, they're cracking into everything," said one driver.
The DOT says it's now checking other road signs to make sure they are locked.
