Bruce Avery, a meteorologist seen on News 12 Networks for nearly 20 years, died on Saturday evening.

He was remembered by News 12’s Rich Von Ohlen as “a terrific meteorologist, friend and colleague.”

“He was a class act and an excellent broadcast meteorologist,” he said.

Avery’s primary work was at Hofstra University’s WRHU, where he managed the radio station for many years. He also taught and mentored many students and aspiring broadcasters.

There was no word yet on any remembrance services.

According to a GoFundMe, Avery was diagnosed five years ago with an aggressive prostate cancer.

“He has a smile that can light up a room and melt your heart, and an authenticity that creates safety and joy. He is the true definition of a Gentle Man - chivalrous, charming, and nurturing,” the fundraiser reads.

He announced his retirement in July 2020 on Facebook saying in part,

"My intention has always been to share weather information as I saw it, so audience(s) could use this information to plan their daily activities or make emergency decisions during impending severe weather events. Have loved every minute of the job."

Hofstra University released a statement on Avery's passing: 

“Hofstra University is deeply saddened by the loss of Bruce Avery, who was dedicated to his craft and to the university in myriad ways - as an expert in his field, a teacher, a colleague, and friend to so many,” said Hofstra President Susan Poser. “During his long tenure at Hofstra, Bruce built WRHU into a national and international award-winning radio station. This includes winning four Marconi awards, most recently in 2022, as the best college radio station in the country. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Bruce’s family.”
