Brooklyn’s Jamaican community is stepping up to support families still recovering from Hurricane Melissa’s devastation.

Assemblywoman Monique Chandler-Waterman, Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams, and the Consulate General of Jamaica joined with Ambassador N. Nick Perry, JAMLEO President Lt. Danae McFarlane, elected officials, clergy, and community stakeholders for a relief effort in East Flatbush.

Members shared updates on the island’s recovery and outlined how New Yorkers can get involved. Community leaders are collecting donations at several drop-off locations across the city, including local NYPD precincts, which are partnering in the effort. Volunteers are gathering basic necessities and assembling care packages to send to those in need.

For New Yorkers still unable to reach loved ones in Jamaica, there’s a Hurricane Melissa Relief Hotline available. Call 888-817-9050 to request assistance. Representatives will forward each inquiry to the relevant authorities in Jamaica to help reconnect families.

Christopher Benjamin, from the Consulate General of Jamaica, says the hotline is an important way for families to get answers and peace of mind while recovery continues.
