Brookhaven Town board members unanimously voted to approve a senior housing proposal in East Patchogue.

The 12 acre lot off Sunrise Highway South Service Road was zoned for single family residences, but the new approval will rezone the property for a planned retirement community.

The development will include 64 units, a clubhouse and a pool.

People who live in the neighborhood next to the lot say they’re concerned about traffic and pollution.

“People don’t treat this place like home if they don’t feel like they have skin on the game,” resident Jeff Berthold said.

Kevin Harrigan has lived on the Swan River since 1990.

“We look out for the river,” Harrigan said. “Politicians come and go. I’ve been here for 35 years.”

“This proposal is about accommodating a need that allows seniors to stay in their home Communities….” Builder Mike Kelly said.”Without maintaining the burden of taking care of single family homes.”

Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri backs the project.

“Someday something will be built on that lot,” Pontieri said. “This is the best use.”
