A massive waste transfer station in Yaphank is being proposed, but some Brookhaven residents don't want it to be controlled by anyone outside of the local elected officials.
Brookhaven community members and the NAACP gathered to share a message with their local officials.
They are rallying to ask Supervisor Ed Romaine to sign a letter keeping control of the possible waste transfer station under local control.
Residents believe that right now it is not part of the government's plan.
The Town of Brookhaven landfill is expected to close in 2024.
Residents understand they are going to have to find some way to get the garbage out.
Above all, they want the community to have input on the way it is done.
