The Town of Brookhaven is targeting vacant and abandoned homes and buildings.

Supervisor Ed Romaine says the town has boarded up nearly 600 derelict homes in the past two years. Now, he's requiring banks and other property owners to register abandoned homes with the town.

Romaine says failure to register will result in a $1,000 fine for the first offense. The fines can run as high as $15,000 for multiple infractions.
