Subway riders and local residents can expect to see major changes coming to Broadway Junction, with the transportation hub set to get big renovations.

The renovations are part of a $500 million investment from both the city and the MTA and will bring a total makeover to the area.

Adjacent to those public investments is a private project known as Herkimer-Williams that is in the planning stages and will focus on renovating parts around the hub to boost the environment.

"Right now, it's sort of a park and ride location but there can be so much more,” said William Wilkins, executive director of the Local Development Corporation of East New York. “There can be retail shopping, there can be housing. There can be educational institutions. All of these can be brought into the envelope to make for a more vibrant community."

Developers say the Herkimer-Williams project’s main focus is to build up unused land in the area down the block from Broadway Junction, introducing 600 units of affordable housing, retail space and pedestrian open space.

Organizers of the project say a Zoom meeting will be held on Dec. 19 to give community members a chance to provide feedback.
