Broadwater Energy says nearly 68 percent of Long Island residents approve its plan to build a liquefied natural gas barge in the Sound, according to a poll the company commissioned.
Broadwater says the phone survey, which polled 1,000 people across Long Island, illustrates the Island?s widespread support for the project. Broadwater has not released the exact questions residents were asked, but promised News 12 Long Island it would do so later.
A recent News 12 Long Island-Hofstra University poll showed 37 percent of Long Islanders supported the plan, while 41 percent are opposed.
Adrienne Esposito, of Citizen?s Campaign for the Environment and a Broadwater opponent, says the survey is just a marketing attempt to create the impression that there is support for the project.
Gov. David Paterson is expected to rule on the plan by the end of the week.
