Bring extra quarters when spending a night out in Babylon because the village extended payment hours at parking meters to 10 p.m.
The change went into effect on Monday for parking meters that take quarters in places like Montauk Highway and Deer Park Avenue.
The previous cutoff time for payment at meters in the village was 6 p.m.
John Skeffington, of Babylon, says people have been asking local businesses for quarters now.
"We didn’t find out until a guy came in the other day wanting quarters. We said, 'No it's only until 6,'" he said. "I see people putting money in all day long."
Eve McDevitt, of West Babylon, found out about the change Thursday.
"It's a little disturbing that now you have to pay up until 10 o'clock,” she said. "I really wish they would put the big box up because then just put it on your credit card and go to dinner and you don't even have to think about it. But now it's, 'Oh, we gotta watch the meter.'"
Tony, of West Islip, said he doesn’t think many people will carry quarters on them.
"So now if you're at a show at the Argyle and it's a four-hour show, you got to come out after every two hours and put more money in the meter,” he said.
Back in 2022, the village doubled the cost for two hour parking from $0.25 to $0.50.
It was the first increase since 1999, and village officials said that increase was to help the village recover financially following the pandemic.
"You want people to come and stay in Babylon and this is definitely a deterrent,” said McDevitt.
News 12 reached out to the mayor's office and the mayor directly to find out why the hours were extended and to know where the extra parking revenue will go.
News 12 is still waiting for a response.
