A 14-year-old boy who was pulled from Ash Creek is on life support, officials say.

The boy had been swept away by the current near Long Island Sound in Bridgeport, officials say. The incident happened Thursday in the South Benson-Ash Creek area around 6 p.m. 

Bridgeport police say the boy entered the water with friends at low tide from the peninsula at St. Mary's By the Sea.

They say as the tide rose, the boys got caught in the current.

Officials say the boy's friends and some fishermen attempted to rescue the 14-year-old but were not able to.

The boy's friends and fishermen were able to swim to shore. 

Fairfield fire officials say one of their fire boats quickly began searching and police later spotted the missing teen underwater in the South Benson and Ash Creek area.

The teen was transported to the South Benson Marina while fire personnel performed lifesaving procedures.

Once at the dock, fire officials say emergency personnel performed CPR and other lifesaving techniques on the teen.

The teen was transported to Bridgeport Hospital then Yale New Haven where he was put on life support.

Officials say the teen appeared to be in grave condition and could not breathe on his own.
