The demolition of a historic 118-year-old bridge on Nassau's North Shore may cause travel troubles for thousands of LIRR riders.

Riders on the Port Washington line will have to take shuttle buses this weekend because of demolition to the crumbling Colonial Road Bridge in Thomaston.

A wider and more reliable bridge will eventually be installed at a cost of $45 million. The project will take one year to complete.

LIRR officials say Port Washington trains will be reduced to hourly service over the weekend. Buses will pick up passengers at Port Washington, Plandome and Manhasset stations and deliver them to the Great Neck station.

Officials say the work week rush hour will return to normal after 3:15 a.m. Monday.
