Two-hundred sample dresses were destroyed in a fire at a Massapequa bridal salon yesterday afternoon, but owner Anthony Micari said none of the customer's dresses were damaged.
Officials said the fire began in the basement of Bridal Reflections in Massapequa shortly before 3 p.m., March 30.
Video given to News 12 by witnesses showed thick black smoke pouring from a side door.
Investigators said 200 wedding dresses were in the storage area in the basement where the fire began. The rest of the building suffered moderate smoke damage, according to the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office.
"We inspected everything, just out of an abundance of caution, we put them in new garment bags so the customers' dresses are safe," Micari said.
Bridal Reflections was open for business when people inside saw smoke coming from the floor as the fire alarm activated, according to the Nassau fire marshal.
No one was injured, and officials say first responders were able to get the fire under control in 30 minutes.
The Coffee Grind next door was also affected by the basement fire.
"Thankfully, no one was injured, and there was no damage to the coffee shop itself," the Coffee Grind said on Instagram. "We're incredibly grateful that our team and customers are all safe."
The coffee shop will remain closed for the next few days "while the situation is fully assessed."
Two other businesses were also boarded up this morning: One Central Lounge and Rafco.
Owners of Rafco wrote on
social media, "Unfortunately, the studio did sustain damage, and we kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate the next steps," they wrote. "All rehearsals will be postponed until further notice."
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
Bridal Reflections called it a "small electrical fire."
The Town of Oyster Bay is evaluating after officials said the business suffered serious damage.
