A Brentwood man accused of stealing the identity of senior citizens faced a judge Tuesday.
Police say Darrel Sharpeson has been using the personal information of three senior citizens from the Atria in Bay Shore and took out loans in their names.
They say the 37-year-old man went to Apple stores in multiple states to buy iPhones.
Sharpeson was arraigned on nine counts of identity theft, all of which are felony charges.
"We are concerned by these allegations, and immediately began an internal review upon learning of the situation. While the individual involved has never been employed by Atria, we will continue to provide any assistance necessary to police investigators and the affected residents' families."
Ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in our community remains our first priority.
We will continue to take every step at Atria Bay Shore to ensure that we provide a safe senior living experience for our residents," said Jason Shott, regional vice president of Atria Senior Living.
Authorities tell News 12 they aren't sure how the suspect obtained personal information for three residents, following a nearly two-year investigation.
Anyone who thinks they could have been a victim can call the Suffolk Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6120.
Sharpeson was placed on supervised release with probation and is wearing a GPS tracker until he is due back in court at the end of the week.
