A Boy Scout was honored Friday night for saving a man in Westhampton Beach.
At the annual meeting of Boy Scout Troop 71, members and their parents enjoyed a traditional night with dinner, raffle tickets and conversation. But there was a surprise for 16-year-old Will Simone, of Port Washington, who in August 2016 saved a man who was struggling in the strong currents off Westhampton Beach.
Simone was awarded the Medal of Merit for his actions. The honor is given to a Scout who has performed an act of service of rare or exceptional character that reflects an uncommon degree of concern for the well-being of others.
"This is just a great honor to have," Simone said. "Not many people get it, and to be among the great people that have done great things, it's an honor."
His parents and fellow Scouts said they are proud of his achievement.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Simone says he's currently working on his Eagle Scout project and plans to go to college and become an engineer.
