Strong Island rescued a kitten from a 30-foot drain at an abandoned property in Port Jefferson over the weekend.
The group says the drain was partially covered by a 5,000-pound slab, so it worked with the Suffolk Emergency Services Unit to try and move the slab with a jack. When that didn't work the Jaws of Life had to be used to move the slab and get a cage down into the drain.
Officials say the kitten didn't go into the cage, so Strong Island and ESU crews had to go back the next day with a Bobcat machine to pick up the slab and get a fishing net into the drain to pick up the kitten.
The kitten, now named Lawrence, will soon be available for adoption at Strong Island rescue.
