Boaters will continue to navigate dangerous waters until the navigational light tower in Jones Inlet at Jones Beach is repaired sometime in 2014.

Sen. Charles Schumer says funds for the $1 million project have already been secured, but that the Coast Guard says the damage is extensive and the repair work must be done in stages.

According to the Coast Guard, the breakwater sustained catastrophic damage during Sandy that must be repaired prior to work on the tower and light.

Boaters say they are left to navigate the waterway blind, risking hitting the jetty and sinking.

Local boaters have joined Schumer in calling the Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to step up the repairs. The breakwater is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and is currently on its projects list.

For now, authorities have placed a hazard buoy near where the light tower used to be, but boaters say it's not adequate to ensure boater safety.
