A boater has died after being found unresponsive in the waters off Suffolk County early Sunday morning.

The Center Moriches Fire Department and Moriches Bay Marine Incident Response Team were activated for a reported medical emergency around 6:30 a.m. in the Atlantic Ocean east of Moriches Inlet.

A Good Samaritan passing by in another boat was the first to call 911 after spotting the male adrift in a 17-foot center console, officials say.

That boater secured a towline to the vessel and started towing it to the Coast Guard Station in East Moriches.

The Eastport Fire Department marine unit intercepted the Good Samaritan and took the man onto their rescue boat and started performing CPR after determining the boater had no pulse.

An ambulance was standing by at the U.S. Coast Guard station to take the patient to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Suffolk police tell News 12 the death is under investigation but appears to be non-criminal in nature.
