Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on parents Thursday to make changes in their homes to protect kids after a new city report found that home fires are the second-leading cause of child deaths in the Bronx and the city.

?Children are playing with matches and lighters ?,? Bloomberg said. ?That underscores the need for parents and guardians to keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.?

Thirty-three children in Brooklyn died in fires from 2001 to 2006.

Citywide figures show that 24 percent of deadly fires involving children were caused by kids playing with matches and lighters, 13 percent of those emanating from a child?s own bedroom.

The FDNY is also helping out communities in target fire areas through education programs and training.

According to the report, the leading cause of death among children was motor-vehicle accidents.
