2 NJ congresswomen introduce legislation to limit ICE’s power

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced a major change in immigration enforcement in the county this morning.

Blakeman says 10 Nassau detectives will soon be able to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) by detaining those living in the county illegally and commit illegal offenses.

Detectives will be able to hold those living here illegally when ICE agents are not readily available.

Fifty Nassau Jail cells will be used, and Blakeman says the county will be reimbursed by the U.S. government for its efforts.

Some immigrant community leaders say this initiative will only increase fear in the immigrant community.

“We do not want to see the police acting as immigration agents, people will not trust the police when they are in trouble,” said Cheryl Keshner, of the Long Island Language Advocates Coalition.
