The unofficial start to the holiday shopping season began early for some Long Islanders at the Roosevelt Field Mall, where many were eager to snap up sale items on Black Friday.
Some stores at the mall were open throughout the night, while others opened as early as 6 a.m.
Although the mall was busy, some shoppers said crowds weren't quite as big as they have been in the past – mostly due to the prominence of online shopping.
In fact, it's been a tough year for some retailers such as Toys R Us, Payless and RadioShack. All three have filed for bankruptcy.
Many big stores have been forced to come up with creative ways to get customers off the computer and into their locations. Target has rolled out a new drive-up service through its app, where ordered items can be delivered carside.
Some retailers, such as Walmart, are offering shoppers special incentives to pick up online purchases at store locations.
Many shoppers told News 12 that getting out to the malls on Black Friday is a family tradition.
"I like to come because I get to spend time with my girls. We do all of our shopping together," said Kathy Santoro.
