Shoppers headed to the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park Friday were urged to park at the nearby train station, where shuttles provided lifts to the outlets.
Many shoppers also resorted to parking at other shopping centers and walking.
The outlet center saw a rush of holiday shoppers looking to scoop up Black Friday deals.
Suffolk police announced, at the request of mall management, that they were "sporadically closing the entrance" to the parking lot whenever it became full. That amounted to the entrance opening and closing about every 15 to 20 minutes, police said.
Police are advising shoppers to expect similar disruptions throughout the weekend.
Last year, some drivers reported being stuck in their cars for hours at the outlets due to a major Black Friday traffic jam.
