Our snow system is taking shape in the inter mountain west of Montana and the Dakotas. It's moving quickly, producing some light accumulations.
The system will travel down with the upper-level winds and steer toward the Delaware coast. There isn't a lot of moisture to work so this alone will limit the amount of snow that can collect.
The air that the storm will be moving into is very cold, so this will produce a light "fluffy" type of snow. Bad for building snow people and snowballs. Excellent for its ease in cleaning. A broom or leaf blower should do.
When does this all start to develop? First flakes around 8pm. Steadier, snowier moments after 11 p.m.
When does this end? Probably around 8-9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
As the storm cruises away from the Jersey shoreline, the winds will pick up, and the bitter cold will return with vengeance. Expect blowing snow through the day on Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, possibly reducing visibilities traveling around.
December has been cold, and this storm is looking to unlock some of the coldest air yet for Monday morning. Widespread morning lows in the single digits and wind chills possible around 0 degrees.
The unseasonably cold spell lingers through mid-week, then a nice (but brief) warm-up is possible by Thursday. Temperatures could rise to the low and mid- 50’s.
