The state Department of Motor Vehicles is cautioning customers about the potential risks associated with purchasing flood-damaged vehicles.
Flood damage can have detrimental effects on crucial vehicle components such as the engine, transmission, wiring, airbags and computer systems.
Even if a car is bought from an area unaffected by flooding, it may have been previously located in a flood zone, with sellers obtaining a new title in a different state.
To check if a vehicle has been reported as salvaged or stolen, the National Insurance Crime Bureau's VIN-check tool is available. Additionally, the NICB provides a free brochure on their website with tips to avoid post-disaster fraud.
