Residents in Bethpage attended a meeting Wednesday evening on the Navy's efforts to clean up toxic contaminants in the local groundwater.

People who live in the area say they believe toxins in the water gave them cancer. They claim their illnesses resulted from Grumman and the Navy dumping dangerous chemicals from manufacturing projects.

Navy officials say they've made significant progress in cleaning up 7,500 pounds of volatile organic compounds.

To boot, the Department of Health says the contaminants are at no risk of reaching homeowners as they are so far beneath the surface.

Some attendees also complained about not being properly notified about remediation efforts. Navy officials say they will work on alleviating those concerns.
