A long-shuttered Long Island spot that used to serve up chicken and corn fritters made a comeback on Monday.
Before there was KFC and Chik-fil-A, hungry Long Islanders flocked to Raay-Nor's Cabin on Sunrise Highway in Baldwin for crispy fried chicken, flaky biscuits and more. It opened in 1949 but has been closed for years.
Butch Yamali, who owns several restaurants on the Island, bought the rights to the name and the recipes. The classic chicken was being served up Monday at the Malibu Beach Club in Lido Beach.
Yamali says he wanted to bring back the classic Raay-Nor's menu that he remembers from when he was a kid.
"I did a lot of research on the recipes and found the cook, and did a lot of taste-testing, and we wanted to bring it back. It was a great place," he says.
Even Ed Kranepool, a '69 Miracle Met, has some amazin' memories of the meals he enjoyed at Raay-Nor's.
"I remember when I was playing, coming by for some chicken or ribs," Kranepool says. “It was great food back then, and this is a great addition to the area."
The Malibu Beach Club is only serving Raay-Nor's chicken this week, and only for lunch and dinner. The staff there recommends calling ahead for reservations.
