Parents and faculty are concerned over a landfill that resides behind a Bellport school.
A 122-page preliminary report from the Department of Environmental Conservation showed organic chemicals like benzene and hydrogen sulfide have been correlated to coming from the landfill.
The landfill can be seen behind the Frank P. Long Intermediate School. Earlier this week, parents and faculty urged the school to be shut down.
"I'm afraid I'm going to get really sick and so are more people at the school because of the landfill," said fourth grader Lily Johnson.
Suffolk County's health commissioner wrote a letter to the state urging them to take more action on the landfill.
The town of Brookhaven told News 12 that the landfill is highly regulated by state and federal authorities, and is continuously monitored and tested.
The DEC told News 12 that the town of Brookhaven has taken corrective steps to remove the odor. State officials also say they are continuing to monitor the air in the surrounding communities.
