HEADING OUT OVERNIGHT?
Partly cloudy with icy spots from refreezing through early Friday morning. It will be cold with overnight and early morning temperatures in the lower to middle 20s. Continue to use caution with all of the snow around still even though several inches of it has already melted.
GREAT WEATHER FRIDAY AND SATURDAY
Before the next wintry or wet weather chances, it cannot be ignored how nice Friday and Saturday will both be great for more snow to melt and to just enjoy some time outside. There can still just be icy spots around, especially at night and early in the morning.
NEXT SNOW CHANCES
Sunday: USE CAUTION — A quick burst of snow is likely from around 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. This can be enough for reduced visibility and a coating to 2 inches of new snow. This will lead to some new slippery spots. Most of Long Island should get around or less than 1 inch out of this, but there is potential for 2 inches if a brief heavier snow band develops.
Monday: The storm that's expected for Monday looks to mostly miss Long Island to the south. It cannot be ruled out, however, that a snow shower or some flurries could occur, but it is looking much drier overall as of Thursday evening.
Tuesday - Wednesday: A brief period of snow or wintry mix will change to plain rain Tuesday evening into Wednesday.
HOW IS THE SNOW MELTING SO FAST?!
The snow from this week's blizzard and snow Wednesday morning is melting quickly already. There is good reason for that. The higher angle of the sun, longer daylight, no ice pellets in the snowpack and warmer temperatures leading up to and following the Blizzard of 2026 all help to get of that snow much more quickly than if a storm of this magnitude happened in January.
Most of the snowpack may be gone within a week. That said, it could take until the end of March or early April to get the higher snow mounds to completely melt.
