Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, passed away after a battle with brain cancer. Joseph Beau Biden III was 46.
The news was announced late Saturday by a Biden family spokesperson. The vice president told the American people, "Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known."
Biden's health struggles surfaced in 2010 when he suffered a stroke and subsequently had a lesion removed. No long-term side effects were present after the stroke, but he was hit with a brain cancer diagnosis this past spring.
The junior Biden served as Delaware's attorney general for two terms and was an Iraq War veteran. Before being deployed to the Army's JAG core, he became friends with Shirley Rep. Lee Zeldin, whom he met at basic training in 2004.
"He was thrilled to be able to serve," Zeldin said. "You could tell that that was all over his bucket list as being able to put on a uniform of those who have come before us, so that was something that he was fulfilling."
Zeldin went on to say that Biden was a man of many talents, and singing was one his lesser-known ones.
President Barack Obama also offered his condolences to the Biden family by saying, "Michelle and I humbly pray for the good Lord to watch over Beau Biden, and to protect and comfort his family here on Earth."
There is no word yet on funeral arrangements, but they are expected to be announced in the coming days.
