Beachgoers notice smoky skies as Canadian wildfire haze reaches the Jersey Shore

At Point Pleasant Beach, the sky appeared more milky and gray than the dramatic orange scenes seen during the wildfire smoke event of June 2023.

Canadian wildfire smoke has now reached the New Jersey beaches, and it's recommended that even healthy people limit their time outside.

But families did not let the smoky skies spoil their summer vacations.

“We are on vacation we are enjoying the day. It does seem a little bit hazy but you know what it makes for a good day on the boardwalk,” said Deb Bartkowski, of Scranton.

Air quality is of concern however, especially for people with underlying conditions.

Pulmonary experts recommend that if you're in that category, stay indoors. And for healthy people, skip the traditional boardwalk run for a gym treadmill. Masks can help, and yes, you can still get sunburnt through all this haze.

“I am on summer break so going for a walk with my friends and we're going to lay out at the beach and enjoy life,” said Kim Dimarino, from Westchester.

One positive side effect of the thick smoke are cooler temperatures.

“Yesterday was actually very hot so this is nice,” said Dimarino.
